Electrolysis:
Common
Questions
& Answers
How does
electrolysis work?
The
professional electrologist inserts a very fine, sterile, disposable
probe alongside the hair in the hair follicle. A small amount of
electrical current is then applied through the probe, destroying the
hair root.

Does the
treatment hurt?
A slight warm sensation is felt when a hair is being treated. The
degree of discomfort will depend on the individual’s sensitivity, as
well as the area being treated. We recommend that you drink plenty
of water prior to your treatment and avoid caffeine before your
treatment.
What areas can
be treated with electrolysis?
All
areas of the body can be treated, including the face, eyebrows,
arms stomach, bikini area, back, chest, breasts, underarms, feet,
hands, fingers, and the outside of the ears. Electrolysis
cannot be performed on the inside of the ears or nose.
Is electrolysis
effective on all hair colors?
Yes,
electrolysis can be successfully performed on all hair. White,
blond, red, black or brown hairs - there are no limitations.
What causes
superfluous hair?
A number
of factors can be the cause, including:
What causes
ingrown hairs and how can they be eliminated?
Ingrown
hairs can develop from shaving, tweezing, or waxing the hairs. The
most common areas to develop ingrown hairs are the beard area,
underarms, legs, and bikini area. They can be eliminated by
permanently removing them with electrolysis. For areas where
permanently removing the hairs is not desired we offer products that
reduce the irritation, thus eliminating the ingrown hairs.
Can anything be
done with ear hair?
Yes,
hair can be successfully removed from the outer area of the ear.
Is it unusual
for eyebrows to become “bushy” with age and can electrolysis
treatments be performed on the eyebrow area?
On the
contrary, both men and women experience an increase in the texture
and length of their eyebrows as they get older. By shaping
the brows with electrolysis, a more natural brow can be achieved.
Can I tweeze or
wax between treatments?
The hair
needs to be visible to the electrologist at the time of the
treatment therefore, it is best to avoid temporary hair removal
methods especially tweezing and waxing in the area the electrolysis
is being performed. The hairs can be cut between treatments.
Can electrolysis
be effective when someone has a hormone disorder or imbalance?
It is very important to seek medical advise and care from a
physician in the case of hormone problems. There are
medications that can improve imbalances. Electrolysis
treatments can be very successful when the electrologist works with
the patient's physician.
Can electrolysis
be performed on areas in which the hair has been removed by
temporary methods such as shaving, tweezing, and waxing?
Temporary hair removal methods can cause hair to become darker, more
coarse, and most likely stronger. Though most people believe
waxed or tweezed hair comes back within a few days or a week, the
truth is it takes at least three weeks and more commonly, up to 20
weeks, to reappear. In order for electrolysis to be effective,
temporary methods that remove the hair from the root must be
discontinued (hairs can still be cut or bleached in between
treatments).
How much does
electrolysis cost?
Electrolysis treatments are based on the amount of time of each
session. Appointments are usually scheduled from 15 minute to one
hour appointments, weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. Prices range from
as little as $20/visit to $75/visit - based
on the length of
visit rather than on the area treated. In the long-run,
electrolysis is much less expensive than the cost of temporary
methods such as waxing, shaving, depilatories, and/or creams.
What type of training does an electrologist have?
In order to practice electrology in the state of Connecticut one
must attend an institute of electrology certified by the Connecticut
Department of Health. Upon completion of the course, a verbal,
written and practical exam must be taken and passed before a license
is issued. Once a license is issued, all electrologists must
maintain a number of predetermined educational hours in order to
remain a licensed electrologist. Look for a current license on
display in the electrologist’s office.
Is
Electrolysis Right for Me?
Your
decision of what type of hair removal would be best for you should
be decided after you have investigated the available methods
thoroughly. Go for a consultation, discuss your particular needs,
budget, etc. Ask the operator about themselves. What type of
training have they had? How long have they been practicing? What
success rate have they had in removing hair permanently? Permanency
is the key. Remember, information is power. Once you have that
information, you can make an informed decision that is right for
you.
